In January 2006, North Carolina State University was named one of the country's "Top 25 Most Connected Campuses" by the Princeton Review and Forbes.com. NC State’s Information Technology Division (ITD) is the university’s central IT support unit for academic computing and strategic information technology systems and services. A division under the Office of the Provost, ITD is proud its part in enabling the university to receive this recognition. As observed in the Forbes.com announcement,

Today's students depend on technology to live, work and play, and today's colleges have to provide high-tech tools in order to attract the best applicants.” (“America’s Most Connected Campuses" Forbes.com.)

Since ITD's early days as the Computing Center, the organization and NC State have been consistently at the forefront of computer networking theory and practice. In the early 1970's, a few dozen faculty wanted network access to the campus mainframe. Now ITD provides computing accounts and services for over 35,000 NC State students, faculty and staff who have high-speed and wireless access to a sophisticated distributed computing environment and the global Internet.

Led by Vice Provost for Information Technology, Sam Averitt, ITD deploys technology infrastructure, systems and services that are essential to the functioning of the university and the advance of NC State's mission in the 21st century. Working in cooperation with NC State colleges and departments, ITD offers resources, support and leadership at all levels of the NC State technology environment and a portfolio of services and resources that are available to all NC State students, faculty and staff.

From award-winning publications for students, to training and support for innovative and accessible technology-rich learning environments, to High Performance Computing systems for advanced researchers in many vital fields of study, ITD staff take pride in providing IT resources and expertise to enable students, faculty and staff achieve "Innovation in Action."

In the face of numerous budget cuts ($834,000 from ITD's operating budget over the past five years), ITD has continued to help NC State respond effectively to growing cyber security threats, new state and federal mandates, and increasing campus demands for expanded IT services and leading-edge technology capabilities.
