TurningPoint 2008 available as campus standard clicker system
In spring 2007, the Classroom Environment Committee (CEC) and the University IT Committee endorsed the recommendation that NC State adopt Turning Technologies’ TurningPoint as the campus standard for classroom interactive response (“clicker”) systems. The TurningPoint 2008 software was released recently and is now available in all ClassTech classrooms. PAMS and CALS have purchased a number of clicker devices for use by students in specific courses. Students in other courses may need to purchase their own clicker. Instructors teaching in ClassTech classrooms who would like to use clickers systems should consult with ClassTech staff: classtech@ncsu.edu.
Instructors or staff who intend to implement clicker systems in classrooms not supported by ClassTech are strongly encouraged to use the TurningPoint 2008 system. The TurningPoint 2008 software is available on the campus NAL system, and the software can be downloaded for use on campus from the Turning Technologies web site. The vendor also offers TurningPoint training online; DELTA has scheduled fall workshops on the use of student response systems in classrooms. For more information, see recent memo on ITD support for the clicker standard from Vice Provost Sam Averitt.

Unity addresses made official for email to students
On August 13, 2007, the university will begin listing only Unity email addresses as the official email addresses associated with students' records in the student information system. Unity email addresses will be used for all official email correspondence to students, including email regarding student account information, eBILLs, and correspondence from instructors regarding classes.
The university made these changes because of the increased use of email for official communications and the need to have confidence that email is being delivered to valid student email addresses. Instructors can continue to use the student email addresses provided by Registration and Records. Students still have the option of forwarding their email to an off-campus account by going to https://sysnews.ncsu.edu/tools-bin/usmdb-forwards
Over the summer, students, faculty and staff were notified of these and other changes to campus business processes related to email addresses used for official university communications. Passwords must be changed at least once a year
Steve Keto and Sam Averitt recently issued a joint memo to alert NC State employees to upcoming changes in campus password standards and procedures. Until recently, most NC State employees and students were encouraged to change computing account passwords every semester, but were not required to do so. Under the new procedures, everyone will need to change their passwords at least once a year. People with access to sensitive data or other people's private information will need to change their passwords more often, depending on the scope and security level of the data. The memo emphasized that data secuity is a "priority for the university, and it is a responsibility that is shared by all of the members of the university community."

Windows Lab Application Survey opens
ITD invites NC State students, faculty and staff to particpate in this year's Unity lab Windows applications survey. ITD uses the survey results to determine which software applications and versions should be included in the NC State Unity Windows lab environment to best meet teaching and learning needs. Approximately 1700 workstations across campus use the Unity Windows computing environment.
Using a tool called LabZapp, faculty, staff and students can provide feedback about the software applications and versions deployed on the Windows workstations in Unity labs. The tool provides the process to recommend adding new applications or removing some of the lesser used ones. LabZapp is designed to remember your selections so that you may return to the survey as often as you like to make further recommendations or just simply modify your previous choices.
