Disaster Recovery Planning
Disaster recovery planning is "The advanced planning and preparation that is necessary to minimize loss and ensure continuity of the critical business functions of an organization in the event of disaster." (Disaster Recovery Journal).
NC State's Department of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning oversees campus disaster recovery planning activities.
The Information Technology Division (ITD) provides business critical IT functions for the University. In cooperation with University efforts, ITD has developed an internal Business Continuity Plan which includes a set of procedures and instructions that detail the process to be followed to recover critical technical and business functions. ITD also supports colleges in their ongoing disaster recovery and business continuity planning and procedures.

- Disaster recovery - Why Plan and Test?
It is difficult to open a newspaper without reading about a tragedy somewhere in the world, but it is always somewhere else. Unfortunately, businesses that think "it will never happen to us" will not be in business long. The next major hurricane could strike North Carolina, the next bomb could go off in Raleigh, or the next hard drive crash could be your PC. In today's world, disaster recovery planning just makes good business sense.
- Disaster recovery - Testing Overview
On a periodic basis, tests of restoration of individual servers and/or datum should occur. This can be accomplished by initiating:
- individual server failures
- restorations of data from archive tapes
Both of these events occur on a regular (although infrequent) basis during the normal course of operations.
- Disaster recovery - Responsibilities
- Develop and test Business Continuity Plan (BCP)
- Annual test of your plan or parts thereof.
- Maintain awareness within your unit.
