News and Notes
Announcements
- Please mark your calendars for the annual ITD Holiday Luncheon, which will be organized this year by Computing Services.
December 21, 2006, 11-1ish, JC Raulston Arboretum : ) - The historic Hillsborough Building Elevator, scene of so many travel adventures over the years, is now Officially Out of Order. Renovations started onTuesday, October 17 and should be completed by the end of the year.
Staffing changes and new personnel
Congratulations go to Sarah Noell and David Ladrie! Both Sarah and David have been promoted to Assistant Directors of Computing Services, Stan North Martin announced.
Greg Sparks introduced Terry Crawford, ComTech’s new Associate Director for Voice, Business, and Student Services. Stan introduced Ed Lee, former part-timer, who has joined Computing Services as Desktop Support Specialist. Welcome aboard, Terry and Ed!
Winter Break and University Closing reminders
As most folks know, the university will be closed during the Winter Break, December 23- January 1. Thursday 28 and Friday 29 are not Official Holidays, however, and Karen Horne reminds everybody that employees must use annual leave, bonus leave, comp time, floating holiday, or Leave Without Pay(if all vacation and bonus leave has been exhausted and prior approval is obtained) for those two days . If your job duties permit you to work during that time, you must also document the appropriate arrangements for telecommuting or work on campus in advance. Special arrangements may also be possible for newly hired staff who have not accrued enough leave, comp time, etc. If you have questions, be sure to talk to your supervisor, Karen Horne, or Gail Gregory.
Friends of ITD
Karen also reminded folks that following the full staff luncheon, the Friends of ITD fund is pretty much out of money. Donations are welcomed - and tax deductible.
Update on 208
Stan also handed out the latest plans for the renovation of 208. The space will be dedicated to Computing Services staff: Dickering Parunak and ClassTech staff; Carrie Levow; Jen Riele; and Bill Coker. New furniture for cubicles is on order. David Ladrie and Sarah Noell will move into offices (with walls!) on the second floor Stan expects the renovation and moves into new spaces will be complete by the beginning of the next semester.
Changes in proposed Data Classification and Data Management Regulations
Jeff Webster gave a quick update on the progress of the new Data Classification and Data Management Regulations. He and others presented the proposed Regulations to the University Council earlier this month. Overall, the Regulations were accepted, with the request that they be combined into one document, to avoid unnecessary confusion. The Deans also requested that a university commitment to user education be added to the document. The Regulation is going forward in the approval process.
Updates from Sam
Full staff meeting: Sam again thanked everyone who helped make the fall’s full staff meeting an enjoyable and informative event. He plans to engage in more detailed discussions with senior staff about the substance of the meeting.
New CIO: Sam said there was nothing new to report on the university’s plans to reorganize IT on campus and hire a new CIO.
Plans for university's web redesign: ITD and the Office of Public Affairs’ Creative Services will likely be collaborating more closely on the support of the university’s new web presence (http://ncsu.edu/redesign/). Unlike other universities, NC State does not have full-time staff dedicated to creating content and supporting the university’s web presence. Sam and Harry Nicholos attended a recent meeting with the Chancellor, Provost and VC for Finance and Business, where Public Affairs requested three new positions for its Creative Services staff to provide this service to the university. The Chancellor gave the go-ahead to develop a more detailed plan.
VCL updates: Sam reported that thanks to the efforts of many, interest in VCL is growing rapidly – on campus and beyond. In the next week, for example, there will be visits to discuss the VCL from East Carolina University, Kannapolis, and Boston College.
Other items and updates
- Barry Eriksen and Alan Galloway reported that there is growing awareness among IT Directors and others about the needs for expanded file storage,back-up and archival services. There is also growing support for ITD providing these services to the campus centrally. The Distributed Data Backup & Archival Assessment team is developing a survey of key constituencies on campus regarding storage, backup and archival practices, needs and wants.
- The names of rooms and other resources listed in Oracle Calendar will soon be changed to conform to the newnaming taxonomyapproved by the campus Oracle Calendar Steering Committee, Harry Nicholos reported. For more info, see http://brickyard.ncsu.edu/resources.html#naming
- Greg James noted that earlier this month ComTech and MCNC engineers successfully reconfigured campus Internet gateways to provide failover redundancies for campus Internet service.
- Susan Klein gave a presentation on Identity and Access Management issues at a recent DELTA staff meeting. DELTA is planning to take on providing more students services such as advising and mentoring for DE-only students, she reported.
hope this is helpful
