Using the ITD Template for Internal Web Sites

The ITD Web site employs a template that you can download and customize for use in the Web site of your own unit within ITD. Here is an outline of the procedure for obtaining, customizing and using this template and its associated files.

  • Downloading the template files
    1. Go to http://www.itd.ncsu.edu/subs/
      about_site/itd_template/itd_template.zip
    2. Download this file into the folder that contains the home page of your unit's site. Be sure to preserve the file structure that is created as the files are unzipped.
NOTE: It is good practice to have a development site that mirrors your active Web site. You can test changes to your pages in your development site and then upload the revised pages to your active site after everything is working properly.
  • Setting up the template for the main page of your site
    1. Open the file in this group that is named edit_me.php.
    2. Customize this file by following the instructions that are provided in the form of comments inside the file itself.
    3. Save this file with its original name and in its original location.
  • Setting up the main topics and subtopics in the left-hand navigation bar
    1. Open the file in this group that is named left_nav.php.
    2. Customize this file by following the instructions that are provided in the form of comments inside the file itself.
    3. Save this file with its original name and in its original location.
  • Using the customized template
  • Setting up a site-specific search
When you customize the edit_me.php file (above), part of the information you provide is used to automatically set up a search engine specific for your ITD unit.
